Welcome to our latest wellbeing check-in blog here at SDC-LEARN! As Christmas is fast approaching, today we look to highlight the importance of taking time for ourself over the festive period. We know just how hectic things can get!
The festive season is exciting, but for anyone working in catering it can also be full-on. Long shifts, busy kitchens, and the pressure to keep everything running smoothly can take its toll. For our candidates who are working in the catering industry, it’s even more important to keep wellbeing front of mind. When things get hectic, it’s easy to put yourself last. But staying healthy and calm helps you perform better at work and keeps your learning on track too. A few small habits can make a big difference.
Here are some simple self-care tips to help you through the busy period:
- Rest when you can: Your usual sleeping pattern might be tricky with late nights and early mornings, but even short quiet breaks can help recharge your batteries.
- Drink fluids and eat well: It’s tempting to grab whatever’s quick but keeping a bottle of water nearby and choosing balanced meals will help you stay focused and energised.
- Take a breather and ‘check in’ with yourself: A couple of deep breaths before service or during a break can calm nerves and reset your mind.
- Don’t overcommit: Extra shifts, outside of work plans and study; it’s okay to say no to extra plans if you need downtime.
- Stay connected: Chatting with friends, family, or colleagues can lift your mood and remind you you’re not alone in this busy period.
- Celebrate the small wins: Whether it’s learning a new skill or getting through a tough shift, give yourself credit for the wins — big or small.
Stress Reduction:
The holidays can be stressful, shopping, family, tight schedules, plus the demands of work-based learning. It’s a recipe for burnout. Taking time for yourself helps lower stress and protect your health. Even small acts, a walk, a book, or a quiet cup of tea, can lift your mood and restore balance. Prioritising self-care means you’re not just surviving the season, you’re setting yourself up for a happier, more productive new year.
When you make time to look after yourself, everything else becomes easier. You’ll find you’ve got more energy, sharper focus, and a better attitude to bring into your work, studies, and relationships. The festive season is always going to be busy, but it doesn’t have to leave you feeling worn out. By putting your wellbeing first, you’ll not only get through the rush but also keep progressing in your training and career. Remember — self-care isn’t an extra or a luxury, it’s what helps you be at your best!
